Project Name: National Avenue Lofts
Service Type: SET Engineering
Project Summary:
SET Environmental (Key Engineering Group) was retained to provide services for the re-development of an old industrial site that contained underground storage systems, and various types of contaminants. We also worked to solve the soil quality concerns which required deep foundations. We obtained approval of the Remedial Action Plan in 30 days in order to meet the financing commitments.
Project Name: Collective Coffee Stack’d Bank
Service Type: SET Engineering
Project Summary:
SET Environmental (Key Engineering Group) was retained to provide Site Environmental Services for soil and groundwater as well as asbestos and lead paint for the re-development of the former industrial foundry building. Key Engineering Group worked closely with the lender to conduct the Site Investigation after soil removal since the site was to be excavated to 20 feet in depth. The larger building in the background was then constructed while the old Kramer Foundry building was redeveloped. Key Engineering Group provided the lender with a guaranteed cost in order for the loan to close and development to begin.
Client: Chemical Manufacturing Company
Project Name: Aluminum Alkyl AST Decontamination
Service Type: High-Hazard Remediation Services
Location: Port Arthur, Texas
Project Summary:
SET Environmental was called to work with a chemical manufacturer in Port Arthor, Texas. Two of their waste aluminum alkyl tanks – each containing 7,000 pounds of partially unreacted aluminum alkyls with solvents and aluminum powder solids – had deteriorated over the past 15 years until the consistency of the material would not flow out of the valves.
SET cut open the tanks under nitrogen and mineral oil blankets to excavate the reactive material and packaged it into DOT-approved containers for transportation. SET also decontaminated the tanks to make them safe for scrap metal recycling and performed the transportation and disposal of the material at SET’s Part-B permitted TSDF in Houston, Texas.
Client:Agricultural Chemical Manufacturer
Project Name: White Phosphorous AST Decontamination and Remediation
Service Type: Compressed Gas Cylinder Disposal
Location: Brownsfield, Texas
Project Summary:
Goodpasture, an agricultural chemical producer, uses white phosphorus as an intermediate to produce fertilizers for the agricultural industry in Texas – storing 750,000 pounds of the material in eleven 30,000-gallon tanks. But, the tanks had been out of service for more than 20 years, causing deterioration to their structural integrity as well as to that of the tank apparatus. This was a dangerous situation because if exposed to air, white phosphorous will burst into flames.
SET was contracted to transfer material out of the tanks and into DOT-approved containers for transportation, to clean the interiors of the tanks, and to decommission and dismantle the tanks for scrap metal recycling.
SET formulated an on-site procedure that combined cold removal with heat/agitation of the white phosphorus and phosphorus muds without entering the tank. Once the bulk of the material was flowable, it was transferred into DOT-approved, 30-gallon drums in an airtight system to ensure no reactive material came in contact with the atmosphere.
SET also excavated 1,500 yd3 of phosphorus-contaminated soil under the tanks and surrounding area to complete the project.
Client: Major Natural Gas Provider
Project Name: Lagoon Dredge, Remediation and Recycling
Service Type: Enviromental Remdiation Services
Location: Wheatfield, IN
Project Summary:
SET worked with a major natural gas provider to solve the problem of their filled settling ponds. These ponds contained 4 million gallons of water, silt, and gypsum sludge – gypsum being a by-product of the pollution control system at this power-generating facility.
SET mobilized a floating auger dredge to pump the material more than 2,000 feet to a drying spoil area created on-site, and employed a long-arm excavator to manually dig out the hard-to-reach material. The rinse and drying area allowed SET to provide the natural gas provider with clean, dry, recyclable gypsum that they were able to recycle and sell to a manufacturer of drywall.
Client: Transportation Company
Project Name: Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether Emergency Response
Service Type: Emergency Spill Response
Location: Chicago, IL
Project Summary:
A tanker transporting 6,100 gallons of Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether (GME), a volatile and combustible substance, overturned on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. The tanker ruptured and split into two portions, releasing its contents, a portion of which ignited. The fire caused significant damage to surrounding structures, and the portion that did not ignite was released into a culvert and corresponding storm sewers.
SET Environmental was contracted to contain the decontamination and to perform remediation services as well SET mobilized vacuum trucks and mobile pressure-washer units to contain and stop further migration of the contaminants and to reopen the roadway. Then, they coordinated with IDOT to allow for remediation activities during low-traffic timeframes, in order to fully restore the site to IDOT standards.
Client: Agriculture and Farm Supply
Project Name: Anhydrous Ammonia Emergency Response and Remediation
Service Type: Emergency Spill Response
Location: Peru, IL
Project Summary:
A chemical transport truck hooked and severed a distribution pipe off of an anhydrous ammonia storage tank, releasing 28,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia into the atmosphere. This happened during a rainstorm, so the ammonia was carried via rain back to the ground, impacting drainage ditches, sewer lines, and porous solids in the area.
SET was contracted to perform the initial emergency response and ongoing site remediation. This included recovering ammonia-impacted surface waters with vacuum tankers and trucks; the excavation, transportation, and disposal of easily accessible ammonia-impacted soils; and the decontamination of impacted buildings and office structures.
SET also designed and installed an interceptor trench along the perimeter of the facility to capture ammonia-impacted rainwater, and installed a dual-phase extraction system to recover ammonia-impacted groundwater and vapors underneath buildings and office areas that had to stay open for business during the remediation effort.
Client: Agricultural Chemical Facility
Project Name: Agricultural Facility Fire Emergency Response, Decontamination, Remediation
Service Type: Emergency Spill Response
Location: Piper City, IL
Project Summary:
This Agricultural/Chemical farm supply business sells pesticides and herbicides to local area farmers. When a fire struck at their Chemical Storage Building, fire departments came from five different jurisdictions to extinguish the blaze with more than 80,000 gallons of water.
SET Environmental provided emergency response by capturing the contaminated water with vacuum trucks; constructing an interceptor trench to prevent the contaminated water from reaching the river; and transporting and disposing the water, soil and debris contaminated with 2,4-D impacted soils.
SET Environmental also established a command center on-site to manage the
24-hour-a-day environmental remediation. The site has since been deemed stable by the Illinois EPA, and SET continues to work closely with their Site Assessment Unit to bring this site to closure.
